Now, I am not a xenophobe. I am 3rd generation Irish on 1 side and 3rd generation German on the other. I love that legal immigrants LOVE America. They are patriotic and still hold the desire of the American Dream - despite the fact that many natural citizens take it for granted. Those here illegally, for whatever reason, start their time here by ignoring our laws. They contribute little to our society, as they largely purchase goods and services in their own communities. Thus, they create their own economy rather than contributing to the larger American economy. Furthermore, a large percentage of funds received from their pay is sent back to their native countries. Somehow, despite this lack of contribution, they receive entitlements from our taxpayer dollars including WIC, Medicaid, Section 8 housing, and Welfare.
I firmly believe that it is only fair that those who are obeying our laws & waiting in line be allowed to have their fair shot before anyone who is here illegally. Taking on the entire population of illegals under an amnesty is untenable for our economy. When you throw public insurance into the mix, it is downright disastrous. We need to be pragmatic here. Sure, lots of people have lots of sad stories, but we simply cannot afford to "help" everyone.
If this argument alone doesn't convince you, consider this - If we are to cover 49 million (1 of the stats being used by democratic strategists) more people under a public health plan:
1. How will we pay for it?
2. Where will we find all of the new doctors needed to care for 49 million additional individuals? At a rate of 100 patients per doctor, we would need 490,000 more doctors in order to care for these 49 million people. For those who deny that we will have rationing, this is a vital question you should be asking yourselves.
Yes, I've worked in such communties as the ones you speak of and people would be more affable to legal immigration if it were an easier process. Yes, immigrants tend to stay in their own communities as the Irish and Germans did when they first came to America. Yes, there is a lot of govt. programs going to undocumented workers but I want them to earn their citizenship. Fight in Afghanistan or Iraq because I know my ass isn't going. Please though can we both agree to debunk the myth that undocumented workers are taking American jobs. Like "Joe Sixpack" is sitting by the phone waiting for a call to pick fruits in the 100 degree heat....
